Don Elliott

Don Elliott

We are almost at a loss for words to express our grief at the passing of Don Elliott earlier today. Similarly there are no words that seem adequate to describe the man himself and the impact he had during his time with us. Our thoughts and prayers are with everyone that knew and loved him. One of them is our own Assistant Chief Jason Benites who wrote the following earlier today as an email to our members and others. It is quoted here with his permission.

“Retired Senior Police Officer Don Elliott passed away at his Oxnard home this morning. His wife, Karen, was by his side.

Don joined the Oxnard Police Department in 1969, and served for many years as a homicide investigator. He has been regarded for decades as the driving force for the Ventura County Sheriff and Police Reserve Academy, from which literally thousands of officers and deputies in this county started their careers. Don served the Oxnard Police Department as an officer until his retirement in 1996, and continued his service to the Reserve Academy program until 2013.

Among his many awards, Don earned the distinction of Oxnard Police Department’s Officer of the Year in 1992, and received the Oxnard Police Chief’s Award of Excellence in 2013. He also received special honors at last December’s Ventura County Reserve Officer of the Year event, for his decades of distinguished service.

He will be missed by many. Please keep Don and his family in your thoughts and prayers.”

A memorial service will be held at 10 AM on Thursday, December 26 at the Crossroads Community Church in Camarillo (161 Plaza La Vista).

It was Don’s wish that in lieu of people buying flowers for his services that they donate the money to the OPOA. The OPOA will use any donations made in Don’s memory for the Fallen Officer Memorial which the OPOA is having built with the cooperation of the City of Oxnard, and the Oxnard Police Dept. It will be adjacent to the Oxnard Police Station.
